New Canaan’s EV Dealer: How Karl Chevrolet Got Here Before Everyone Else

This post is part of our “Plugged In” series — Karl Chevrolet’s guide to EVs for Fairfield County drivers.

When a customer walks into Karl Chevrolet today and asks about the Equinox EV, they’re not talking to a dealership that just started paying attention to electric vehicles. They’re talking to a team that has been investing in this transition for years — in the infrastructure, in the inventory, and in a conviction that electric mobility isn’t a trend to manage. It’s a direction to lead.

From early Fairfield County grass roots community events like Live Green Connecticut, to helping to start the first EV Car Club in Connecticut around 2010 in Westport, to sponsoring numerous public charging stations throughout the area, Karl Chevrolet has been building its reputation as an EV leader from the beginning.

That’s a story worth telling, because it matters when you’re deciding who to trust with one of the most significant vehicle purchases of your life.

The Full Lineup and the Commitment Behind It

Karl Chevrolet carries Chevrolet’s complete electric vehicle lineup: the 2027 Bolt, the Equinox EV, the Blazer EV, and the Silverado EV. That breadth, from an affordable compact starting under $30,000 to a full-size electric pickup with class-leading range, isn’t accidental. It reflects a deliberate choice to be all-in on electric rather than dipping a toe in the water.

The 2027 Bolt is back, redesigned and better than ever, and it may be the most important EV in Chevrolet’s lineup for a lot of Fairfield County buyers. Starting at $27,600, it’s Chevrolet’s most affordable EV and one of the strongest values in the segment. The new generation brings 262 miles of EPA-estimated range, a faster charging architecture, more horsepower, and available Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance. Autoblog, in a review published this week, called it a genuine winner, noting that its interior quality and commuter-friendly feature set punch well above its price point. We have the Bolt in stock now and have already delivered the first ones to local customers.

The Equinox EV is the vehicle rewriting the conversation about EV pricing in Fairfield County, with 319 miles of EPA-estimated range and, right now, a price that has reached parity with its gas counterpart. We covered that story in our first post in this series.

The Blazer EV brings a sportier profile and up to 320 miles of range in its longest-range configuration, a compelling option for drivers who want the electric advantage with a more dynamic look and feel. We covered Blazer EV’s competitive advantages over the Tesla Model Y and Polstar 3 in a recent post.

And the Silverado EV is unlike anything that has existed before in the full-size truck segment. With up to 450 miles of estimated range in its extended-range configuration, it carries the capability Fairfield County contractors, boat owners, and weekend haulers have always needed — without a drop of gasoline. And while the Tesla Cyber Truck stands out in some awkward ways, all the Silverado EV does is perform better in almost every way!

These aren’t compliance vehicles built to satisfy a mandate. They’re genuine, well-engineered machines that we sell because we believe in them.

We Helped Build the Charging Network

Selling EVs is one thing. Helping build the infrastructure that makes EV ownership practical for an entire region is something else.

Karl Chevrolet has been a leading sponsor of public EV charging stations across Fairfield County, including installations in New Canaan, Norwalk, Westport, Stamford, and Greenwich. We supported this effort not because it was required, but because we understood early on that range anxiety and charging access were the real barriers standing between curious drivers and confident EV owners.

When you charge at a public station in Fairfield County, there’s a good chance Karl Chevrolet helped put it there.

We Practice What We Preach at 261 Elm Street

Our commitment to sustainable energy doesn’t stop at the vehicles we sell. The Karl Chevrolet facility itself has been operating with sustainability in mind for years.

Roof-top Solar Array at Karl Chevrolet in New Canaan, CT

Rooftop solar panels generate electricity at our dealership — reducing our grid dependence and our carbon footprint. Waste-oil furnaces recycle used motor oil from our service department into heat for our facility, keeping used oil out of the waste stream and reducing our heating costs. We also use recycled rainwater in our operations — a small detail that reflects a larger philosophy.

We mention these things not to claim perfection, but because we think they say something about who we are. A dealership that installs solar panels on its own roof, that recycles its waste oil, that sponsors public charging infrastructure before it becomes fashionable — that’s a dealership whose commitment to this transition is genuine.

Daphne Dixon and the Road That Proved the Point

Daphne Dixon poses with her Chevrolet Equinox EV during her cross country EV Road Trip in July 2024.

One of the most meaningful things we’ve done in the EV space is sponsor local content creator and road tripper Daphne Dixon — a real person, driving real distances, in a real Chevrolet EV. Daphne is also the Executive Director of Connecticut based LiveGreenCT.org.

Daphne’s experiences behind the wheel of an electric Chevrolet have done more to answer the honest questions about EV ownership than any spec sheet could. Range anxiety, charging stops, real-world highway performance, what it’s actually like to arrive somewhere new and plug in — she’s covered it all, with the kind of candor that comes from someone who isn’t paid to pretend everything is perfect.

Her road trip experiences will feature prominently later in this series. We think her perspective will resonate with exactly the kind of thoughtful, curious driver this guide is written for.

Nearly a Century of Doing Things Before They Were Expected

Karl Chevrolet was founded in 1927 by Leo Karl Sr. and his brother Emil. Nearly 100 years later, it’s still a family business — run today by Leo’s grandsons Leo III and Steve Karl — and still rooted in the same conviction that guided the first generation: do right by the customer, invest in the community, and take the long view.

That philosophy has expressed itself in a lot of ways over the decades. Leo Jr. started a pension plan for his employees in 1962 — not because anyone required it, but because he believed in taking care of the people who took care of his customers. During COVID, when scarce inventory gave many dealers cover to charge thousands above sticker price, Karl Chevrolet honored MSRP for every customer. When Grace Farms Foundation needed help distributing medical supplies to local hospitals and first responders, Karl Chevrolet became a logistics hub.

The investment in EVs and sustainable energy infrastructure is a continuation of that same pattern. Not reactive. Not reluctant. Just a family business looking around, seeing where things are going, and deciding to get there first.

What This Means for You as a Buyer

When you buy an EV from Karl Chevrolet, you’re not navigating unfamiliar territory with a dealer who’s figuring it out alongside you.

You’re working with a team that has been selling Chevrolet EVs, answering real customer questions about range and charging and cost of ownership, and living alongside this technology for years. Our service department is staffed by factory-trained Chevrolet technicians who know these vehicles. Our sales team has answered every question you’re likely to bring in — and probably a few you haven’t thought of yet.  Most importantly, you’re working with a team full of folks who have been driving an EV for their own personal vehicle for many years and who are happy to share their real-world experiences.

And you’re buying from a dealership that has a 5-star Carfax rating, nearly 1,900 customers who have bookmarked us as their preferred dealer, and a nearly 100-year track record of doing business the same way: transparently, fairly, and with the long view in mind.

The EV transition is the most significant shift in personal transportation since the automobile replaced the horse. At Karl Chevrolet, we’ve been preparing for it for years.

We’re ready when you are.
